Rivers and streams are flowing-water ecosystems. These ecosystems are
featured by the unidirectional flow of water from their
sources (where they begin) to their mouths (where they
enter into another water body). They are usually embedded
in terrestrial landscapes and thus, cannot be isolated
from the surroundings. As the types of land where water
flows are very diverse, rivers and streams always exhibit
great changes between their sources and mouths.
